The GOYT Craft Instruments Workshop
Situated in Chapel-en-le-Frith, at the edge of the Peak District and within a stones throw of the river Goyt, where GOYT Craft Instruments derives its name, the workshop is equipped to handle all aspects of the build.
The majority of GOYT drums begin life as Birch Plywood or 1.5mm veneer laminates. When wood orders arrive I first sort and rip the boards into rough lengths for the different elements of our drums.
I choose the best quality wood and, when using custom veneers, aim to find the best figuring and markings to enhance the look of the drums when complete.
Custom drums and special Origin Series drums make use of a range of veneers and marquetry and finishes including satin, wax and lacquer.
I can add designs to shells and skins using pyrography, transfers, paints and dyes if required.
A choice of solid ash wood hoops is available. These are used for the tuning rings- steam bent on site, ready for final assembly.
SKINS:
THE most important part of any drum; we use a selection of goat skins and lambeg skins for GOYT Craft drums for the majority of Bodhrán builds. I can source deer, kangaroo or calf skins also if required and can offer skin lapping and mounting service for other hand drums, snares or timpani drums.
I responsibly source all our skins and finish them with my own conditioning process to produce skins that are supple, smooth and that offer a good tonal range
